The basket weaving cooperative Imasirire (sunrise, in the local language), was set up by the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in 2007. Here, the ethnic background doesn't matter. A perilous, vertical ascent with a sheer drop of hundreds of meters takes visitors to the entrance after several hours climbing. Local people however, both young and old, ascend with ease, instinctively reaching the foot- holds molded by steps of pilgrims for thousands of years. Over the centuries, the church has been a particularly important Orthodox Christian pilgrimage site; so much so that many devotees came here to die. The hair-raising and breath-reducing climb to reach this church involves scaling a vertical cliff-face, using ancient foot and hand-holds in a finely choreographed pattern, under strict instructions from the church wardens. One false move and you fall to your death, though according to legend the patron Saint of the church will not allow this to happen. When asked why the churches are built so high, the priests and monks say that it is to be closer to God. Many priests spend decades living in these basilicas in the sky, returning to the valley below only infrequently. The city is a maze of dark, narrow caves and canyons, sometimes just wide enough for a single person. They lead to eleven churches, a marvel of architecture - hewn out of solid rock, entirely below ground level, some 900 years ago. There are many legends surrounding the creation of the churches, one of which says that humans worked during the day and angels would speed up the building overnight. Historically cowries are seen as a sign of fertility and wealth by many traditional societies across Africa. The shells originate in the Indian Ocean, thousands of km’s from this woman’s village. Historically, they would find their way to even the most remote places along trade routes. Humans across the globe have used cowries as currency for thousands of years. PINKK aims to support them further by building irrigation pools in the garden and buying a solar pump, to reduce the time and effort spent watering the plots by hand from a well during the dry season. The city is a maze of dark, narrow caves and canyons, sometimes just wide enough for a single person. They lead to eleven churches, a marvel of architecture - hewn out of solid rock, entirely below ground level, some 900 years ago. There are many legends surrounding the creation of the churches, one of which says that humans worked during the day and angels would speed up the building overnight. Her necklaces and cowrie shell belt are rich with meaning denoting her age and status in the community. The recycled watch chain on her neck is a popular addition amongst the Arbore and neighbouring communities. Historically cowries are seen as a sign of fertility and wealth by many traditional societies across Africa. The shells originate in the Indian Ocean, thousands of km’s from this woman’s village. Historically, they would find their way to even the most remote places along trade routes. Humans across the globe have used cowries as currency for thousands of years. With her distinctive scars and news of distant places she was very popular, surrounded by friends who had not seen her for ages. The rivers where the Suri live contain gold which families trade for things more valuable to them like cattle. With the help of a translator, the girls told me that they make scars like this on themselves, or two friends might sit and mark each other. They find them very beautiful, a mark of a girl’s self confidence and artistic expression. We spent the last moments of the sunset together above the Omo river, the village dozing in the dust, herds of goats coming back to rest. The Karo people are one of the smallest communities in the valley, numbering just above 1000 people. The passage of time here is marked by the seasonal flooding of the river, as it has been for hundreds of years, providing the Karo with mud for crops and fishing. There is no running water, no electricity, no reception. The basket weaving cooperative Imasirire (sunrise, in the local language), was set up by the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in 2007. Here, the ethnic background doesn't matter. All that does is weaving baskets with all the colors of the rainbow and selling them at a profit. Christians from all over Ethiopia journey to the ancient city of Lalibela for one of the most important festivals in the Orthodox Christian calendar. The faithful will walk for days, even weeks, to get here, many of them traversing the rugged mountains barefoot, making their way along winding, hilly roads to reach the sacred city. Many bring only their prayer sticks and ceremonial white shrouds. The basket weaving cooperative Imasirire (sunrise, in the local language), was set up by the Millennium Villages Project (MVP) in 2007. Here, the ethnic background doesn't matter. She was preoccupied when I took this photo with preparations for her son's wedding, and reminded me of a someone clutching a rosary in classic church paintings. After the death of her husband she looked after the family's cattle heard, the main source of wealth and prestige for Masai people, and raised a large family of children who are educated and now prominent in the community. Always grateful for this family's hospitality. A perilous, vertical ascent with a sheer drop of hundreds of meters takes visitors to the entrance after several hours climbing. Local people however, both young and old, ascend with ease, instinctively reaching the foot- holds moulded by steps of pilgrims for thousands of years. Tigray’s rocky cliffs are dotted with hundreds of cave churches like this, hand carved in around the 6th century AD.
