People of the Great Rift Valley

Art and culture along the Great Rift Valley, which runs from runs from the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon to Mozambique, thus creating a unique highway for ethnic and cultural diversity. Along Ethiopia's Omo River, communities like the Hamer, Karo, Mursi and Suri live a centuries-old way of life, based on pastoralism and flood-plain agriculture. Body scarring, elaborate jewellery, hair styles and clothing is used to denote nuances in social status, beauty, age and family connections. The Suri people in particular are best known for using their natural habitat and found objects for elaborate body decoration, including flowers, clay, and feathers, which are put together in impressive displays for special events in the community.
